Buick LeSabre was a full-size car aptly named after the French light-cavalry sword of the early modern and Napoleonic eras. The more important factoid about it, however, was that it was based on a 1951 show car designed by Harley Earl, the legendary auto designer and first head of design at GM. It replaced the Buick Special upon release of its first generation in 1959, running eight generations and going through many changes along the way.

Notable years include 1986, where the sixth generation, now in front-wheel drive, saw a Grand National model built to qualify the coupe body style for NASCAR racing. In 1989, for several years, JD Power would call the car one of the highest rated for customer satisfaction. In 1993, during its seventh generation, a special edition would be sold to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Buick. 2000's eight generation would see a 2003 Celebration Edition package added, recognizing the Buick centennial. By 2005, it was a best-seller among full-size cars, soon after replaced by the Buick Lucerne sedan.

Throughout the years, the sedan featured an array of engine options, including a3.8-liter V6. Manual and automatic transmissions managed gear changes. Features have included daytime running lights, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, 15-inch wheels, an AM/FM sound system with CD player, satellite radio, heated front leather seats, and rain-sensing wipers.
